Bosses at Rawtenstall Market have suspended their Foodie Friday events after young people brought alcohol onto the premises.

The popular Foodie Friday events have been held every month with food stalls, a DJ and live music.

Posting on Facebook, Rawtenstall Market Management described how 'young individuals' have been 'congregating to bring alcohol onto the premises, often with attempts to purchase alcohol underage, either directly or through their parents'.

While the team has brought the issue up with police and security teams, they say the situation has escalated to a point where it poses significant health and safety risks.

A spokesperson for Rawtenstall Market Management said: "After much consideration, we have made the difficult decision to suspend our Foodie Friday events. When we launched this event three years ago, our aim was to create a vibrant and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone — from families to friend groups and beyond. However, recent months have revealed concerning changes in the nature of these gatherings.

"Unfortunately, it has come to our attention that our events have evolved into a space where young individuals are congregating to bring alcohol onto the premises, often with attempts to purchase alcohol underage, either directly or through their parents. This behaviour is not in line with the spirit of our community events, and we cannot condone it.

"Despite efforts from management, including engagement with local law enforcement and security teams, the situation has escalated to a point where it poses significant health and safety risks. We are committed to upholding our premises licenses and adhering to our license objectives at all times.

"Above all, we prioritise the safety and well-being of our team members. We will not tolerate any form of abuse or intimidation towards them.

"While this decision is regrettable, we believe it is necessary to take this pause to reassess and reconfigure the event for the future. We acknowledge the disappointment this may bring our community, as Foodie Friday has become a cherished tradition."

Despite the hiatus from the event, the market will remain open on Friday evenings offering food and drinks.

The market states their traders are 'well-versed' in Challenge 25 guidelines, meaning they are trained to ask for ID from anyone who looks younger than 25.

Only food and drink purchased on-site should be consumed within the market area.

The spokesperson added: "We are excited to share that the upcoming redevelopment of our market space will provide us with enhanced capabilities to manage events more effectively and safely.

"The planned improvements, set to commence next year, will include upgraded facilities and layout enhancements that will contribute to a more controlled and enjoyable atmosphere for all attendees.

"We look forward to this exciting phase of growth and improvement, which will ultimately enable us to bring back Foodie Friday and other community events with renewed energy and security measures in place.

"Thank you for your patience and continued support as we work towards creating a better and safer environment for our community to come together and celebrate. We appreciate your understanding and continued support during this time.

"We look forward to the opportunity to revisit and revitalise Foodie Friday in the future, making it an event that truly reflects the values and spirit of our wonderful community."
