This slightly battered photo will bring back memories of early morning queuing for anyone who grew up in Accrington in the Fifties and Sixties.

Lancashire Telegraph: Accrington baths, 1963

For this was Accrington baths on St James Street where many of the town’s schools would take their pupils for swimming lessons, often starting first thing.

It was a traditional baths with changing cubicles surrounding the tiled pool.

Swimmers would have to walk through the antiseptic foot bath before being able to access the pool. And depending on your teacher, a cold shower was often compulsory before you could get in the pool.
